Halloween is a special time of year for children who enjoy dressing up as their favorite character or super hero. Although the holiday can be spooky fun for everyone, there are some tips children and parents need to know to stay safe.

Young children should be accompanied by an adult while trick-or-treating.

Older children should be given a designated route to follow while trick-or-treating.

A curfew should be put in place to know when your children will return home.

Let children know the safest place to trick-or-treat are familiar, well-lit places.

Treats should be inspected by parents before children eat them. No candy should be eaten before-hand.

Reflective tape or glow sticks on costumes will help with visibility in dimly lit streets.

To avoid skin or eye irritation, make sure all makeup is wiped off before bedtime.

Adults should encourage children to leave cellular devices at home so they can keep their heads up when walking and focus on their surroundings.

As for motorists, they are encouraged to watch for children on roadways, medians and curbs. Drivers should take extra caution when entering or exiting their driveways. New or inexperienced drivers should be discouraged from driving during the holiday. Stay safe, and have a “spooktastic” Halloween!
