Student winners on Main St. Banner Art Contest honored

Community Wednesday, April 19, 2017

On April 5, a special exhibit was held on Main Street for the winners of the 4th Annual Main Street Banner Art Contest. In attendance were students and their families, as well as area school teachers and principals, who celebrated the unveiling of the banners along Main Street.

This year’s theme was “Miami Lakes Inspires Me.” Artwork was to interpret how Miami Lakes has shaped something that inspired the students. Examples included, but were not limited to the following: To be athletic or enjoy the outdoors because of the parks; possibly Miami Lakes has instilled a love for animals, or a desire to give back through community service.

The overall winners from grades K-5 were Skye Lorenzo, Sofia Perez, Camila Robau, Klark Casas, DaSani Emily Costa, Samig Sandoval, Jasmine Uz, and Felipe Caceres.

The overall winners from grades 6-8 were Madison Londono, Rebeca Gil, Elias Velazquez, Kelly Amaro, Mariafernanda Soto, Brianna Busto, Lissbet Hernandez, Melanie Montoya, Biloux Henry, Alejandro Santana, Melanie Fernandez, and Mia Wolff.

And for high school, the overall winners were Franco Gomez, Kristen Gonzalez, Michael Chan, Amanda Badia, Madison Lunday, and Gabriela Badia.

The evening was made possible by the Main Street Merchants, The Graham Companies, The Miami Laker, and Artist & Craftsman Supply. Each student received new art supplies as well as award gifts from LA Sweetz and Cobb Theater.

Over 150 students submitted artwork from Miami Lakes area schools including Miami Lakes K-8 Center, Bob Graham Education Center, Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School, Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High, and Miami Lakes Education Center.

Twenty-six students’ artwork have been selected to be hung on the light pole banners along Main Street. Banners will be on display through June while selected original artwork will be located at 6816 Main Street in the Keyes window boxes.
