The Miami Lakes town council approved Mayor Manny Cid’s proposal for a drop off box at the government center to accept old and tattered American flags that are no longer fit for display.

Boy Scout Troop 566 from Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church and the town’s Veterans Committee will recommend designs for the box and seek a sponsor for it, Cid said on Sept. 15

The city of Tamarac uses a flag disposal box that resembles a painted U.S Mail box, according to a photo shared by Cid.

The scouts in Troop 566  burn retired flags in a formal ceremony that follows federal guidelines, Scout Master Sean Schwinghammer said.
