The non-profit TREEmendous Miami was honored in early August by the Miami City Commission for planting more than 25,000 trees by volunteers during 16 years. The group works to restore and increase the tree canopy in Miami-Dade County by planting and maintaining trees at schools, in parks, in blighted areas, along main thoroughfares and numerous neighborhood streets along with the restoration of the historic Miami City Cemetery.
The group’s volunteers have included more than 6,700 students who have earned community service hours while learning about the importance of trees in the environment.
An ongoing project is along U.S. #1 from the end of I-95 to Bird Road along the Metrorail route. Its colorful design is viewed by a captive audience of rush hour drivers, moving slowly enough to appreciate the variety of tropical plantings in a model of linear landscaping.
TREEmendous Miami is supported by memberships, city, county and stage grants, and private donations. For more information, visit www.treemendousmiami.org.
