The Miami Lakes town council banned local businesses from selling E-cigarettes to minors.
The ordinance, approved Jan. 21, did not describe possible penalties for businesses that sell the products which allow users to “vape” liquid in pipes.
“Currently, there is no penalty established yet,” Miami Lakes Town Manager Edward Pidermann said after the meeting. “This was the first phase on enacting this measure. Now we will work with the Miami-Dade Police Department on penalties.”
The council’s approval of the ordinance was a unanimous 5-0 vote, with councilmembers Carlos Alvarez and Jeffrey Rodriguez absent for the decision.
Business owners who sell the products must post signs warning that they are not to be sold to anyone younger than 18.
Customers will have to show identification and proof of age to make their purchases.
