The Zonta Club of Miami Lakes awarded a $1,000 scholarship to a science scholar.

The Club recognized Ligia Camilla Araque, 22, of Weston, who is pursuing a Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering at Florida International University.

Araque earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering, also from FIU, where she is a program assistant at the Women’s Center.

Araque is secretary of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and vice president for the Society of Women Engineers.

She is also a National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering Scholar.

The Zontas awarded the scholarship in January, when Zonta Clubs world- wide celebrated aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart.

Earhart was an author and aviation record setter. Eighty-nine years ago, she was the first woman to accomplish a solo transatlantic flight.

While attempting to fly around the globe in 1937, Earhart’s plane vanished over the Pacific Ocean.

Zonta International, to which the Miami Lakes club belongs, advocates for equality for women and girls; for ending gender-based violence and child marriage and for expanding access to education.
