Michelle Wright, third grade teacher at Miami Lakes K-8 Center, was selected as one of the winners of the Annual Black History Month Excellence in Education Award. She was nominated by fellow colleague and third grade teacher Kristina Cala.
Governor Rick Scott and First Lady Ann Scott initiated the Annual Black History Month Excellence in Education Award contest in early January. The contest was open to all African-American, full time educators. Only three winners, one for elementary, middle and high schools, in the state of Florida were selected.
"Michelle Wright was nominated for the award because she single handedly spearheaded this year's Black History Month activities at Miami Lakes K-8 Center," said Cala.
Miami Lakes K-8 Center's Black History Month activities included essay competitions, projects, daily trivia questions, weekly spotlights on historical figures, and an assembly featuring an African storyteller who shared African history, played the djembe, and sang the African national anthem.
Wright was honored at a reception at the governor's mansion in Tallahassee on Tuesday, February 25, for her achievement. She and the other winners each received $1,500.
