Do the Right Thing of Miami, Inc. recognized two teenagers from the Miami Lakes community in January for their selfless acts on behalf of others.
Susan Venegas, 18, of Hialeah is a senior at Hialeah Gardens Senior High School.
She demonstrates true commitment to her school and community, the organization said on its website.
Susan maintains a 5.3 weighted GPA, is a member of her school’s marching band and is co-editor and a photographer for the yearbook.
She is a youth leader at her church and school clubs.
Since the coronavirus pandemic began, Susan has had a janitorial job at an elementary school where she disinfects classrooms. She also launched a campaign with posters and flyers to promote masks and how to wear them properly, Do the Right Thing said.
In 2020, Susan also organized a food drive and for Veterans Day, asked classmates to write letters to veterans.
Christa Curry, 17, of Miami Gardens is a junior at Barbara Goleman Senior High School.
Christa developed the habit of giving from her own piggy bank when she was a young child and
has continued to do so on behalf of homeless women and children.
Her community service has attracted support from major corporations which contribute to her causes.
Last Christmas, Christa brought toys to 100 kids at Miami Rescue Mission and blankets to veterans Miami VA Medical Center, according to Do the Right Thing.
She also distributed $50 Walmart gift cards to 15 children at Miami Bridge so they could buy personal care items.
Christa also helped secure rent, clothes and supplies for a family with a premature baby. which was displaced by the pandemic.
Christa was United Way of Miami-Dade’s Outstanding Youth Award winner in 2020.
The Do the Right Thing program partners with law enforcement and recognizes children for their good deeds, accomplishments and for serving as role models for their peers.
