Girl Scout earns Silver Award for butterfly project

    Giuliana Ladeira of Miami Lakes Girl Scout Troop 902 earned a Silver Award for her project to attract Monarch butterflies by creating a butterfly garden at The Growing Place at Miami Lakes Congregational Church. Giuliana, shown at center in the photo above, and Scouts Gabriela Jimenez, at left, and Grace Gonzalez, shown at right, planted milkweed and other plants to attract the insects.

    Giuliana is among 23 scouts in sixth, seventh or eighth grades in Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys who earned a Silver Award.

    The troop is a member of Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida, formed in Miami in 1923.
