Hialeah Miami Lakes High conducts induction event for National Honor Society

On May 19, the Trojan Chapter of the National Honor Society (NHS) held its induction ceremony at Shula's Grand Slam Ballroom. Hialeah Miami Lakes High School (HML) administrators, teachers, students and family gathered to welcome new NHS members as well as honor outstanding achievements by current members during the 2017-2018 school year.  

The top three freshmen scholars were Jennifer Giniebra, Julian Feliciano and Jean Rivero. For sophomores, the top three scholars were Rebeca Prieto, Ashly Ruiz and Akil Cole. The top three juniors were Naomi Valdez, Meia Chambers, and Erik Fernandez. The top senior was Daisy Laserna, who will attend Columbia University. Jonathan Feliciano and Krysten Sliwinski round out the top three seniors, both of whom will attend the University of Central Florida.  

Tomas DiCostanzo was recognized as the top fund raiser, and Daniel Miro was recognized as the top community service volunteer. During the 2017-2018 school year, HML's NHS raised over $7,500 for charity, and donated over 9,300 hours of community service to the school and community, according to NHS faculty advisor Gina Bryson-Prieto.  

Entertainment was provided by the HML Jazz Band, Major Octave. New officers were announced for the coming school year, and they include Daniel Miro, Gerardo Basallo, Kellyn Pritchard, Erik Fernandez, Rebeca Prieto and Franco Hinojosa. Their goal for next year is to surpass $10,000 raised for the American Cancer Society and 10,000 community service hours.
