Alejandro Diaz-Rubio, a native of Spain who came to the United States at four years old, grasped the English language and made a home in Miami Lakes. Diaz-Rubio attended HML and graduated in the class of 1992 before moving on to FIU to earn a bachelor’s in Advertising and Marketing and then a career in public relations.
After working at the Coconut Grove Times and the South Miami Post, Diaz-Rubio found himself using his talents as a liaison between lenders and property managers in construction management. During this time Diaz-Rubio began substituting at local schools before a moment of clarity came to him in 2004.
“My wife’s former principal, whom I respected very much, brought me an interesting opportunity,” said Diaz-Rubio. “I began a career in education. It has been 13 years and I love what I do. I could not picture myself outside the classroom.”
Diaz-Rubio teaches English, Journalism, Yearbook, and serves as the junior class sponsor. He has previously taught other grade levels in English. He was selected as Hialeah Miami Lakes’ Rookie Teacher of the Year and he credits this accomplishment to his wife and teaching partner, Elena Sanchez, and a great administration.
As a father to two young girls, Allyson and Alexis, Diaz-Rubio recognizes the invaluable effort and results that parental involvement can bring to students to make them well-rounded intellects.
“We are lucky to live in an area that highlights so much of the world but unfortunately, so many kids here in South Florida have never been to the beach, don’t know what the inside of a museum looks like, and have never been north of I-595 or south of the Dolphin expressway. The more students are exposed to diversity and a culture different from theirs, the more likely they are to accept it and yearn for more,” said Diaz-Rubio.
