Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) will be hosting special events across the county to kick off school bond projects resulting from the overwhelming voter approval of the $1.2 billion General Obligation Bond (GOB). The bond is being used to modernize and construct school buildings throughout the District, expand student capacity, enhance facility safety, and provide technology upgrades at all schools.
The kick-off event was hosted at Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School, home of the Trojans, which took place on Thursday, October 12. The kick-off event to break ground was attended by Schools Superintendent Alberto M. Carvalho, principal Lisa B. Garcia, Miami Lakes Mayor Manny Cid and District representatives.
Slated to be completed March 2019 at HML, the total GOB investment of $6.3 million will provide for a number of improvements, including a new bus drop-off and covered walkway, resurfacing and restriping of the basketball courts, renovation of the gymnasium’s bleachers, a new scoreboard, a new softball dugout, system-wide improvements to the HVAC system, new flooring, ceiling tile and grid replacement, and classroom technology upgrades throughout.
HML was built in 1971 to serve students who live in Miami Lakes, Opa Locka, and parts of Hialeah. The school is popular for its iPrep Academy, a magnet program, which receives an entire floor dedicated to 100 students.
“This is a school that has undergone a dramatic transformation and is delivering on the promise of great education in our community,” said Carvalho.
