Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School has a proven track record of improvement and success over the last decade and to continue to enhance the resources available to students, the school is inaugurating the AP Capstone program for the upcoming school year.

iPrep lead teacher, Jennifer Murray, noted that the success of the school is due to a changing culture of expectation for reaching potential. Last school year, HML surpassed the district averages for passing scores on the Advanced Placement exams while increasing the number of students that had access to the exams.

“The whole notion of equity to access is usually that if you increase the numbers, the scores go down, but that wasn’t the case for us at all,” said Murray. “We increased access and our scores are continually going up and so with that we have been deemed a school that is worthy of the AP Capstone program.”

The program is the fourth to be added to the school’s impressive list of magnets including the iPrep Academy, Legal Studies, Digital Media and Technology, and Entrepreneurship. The school received the highest number of applicants for the upcoming school year this application cycle and a large majority are from students outside of the school’s boundaries, further diversifying the pool of students attending HML.

“People are gaining our trust because they see what we’re doing, so that is augmenting the types of students we’re enrolling each year. A combination of the teachers’ commitment, the students’ hard work, and the parents that are involved,  together make a community-wide effort for improvement. We keep getting better and better, not only in the classroom and magnets but also our clubs like Model UN, DECA and FBLA all having attended competitions.”
