HML reinvents itself; welcomes new principal

Over the last several years, Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High has reinvented itself and reclaimed much of the glory of its history. The Advanced Placement Exam passing rate has increased by over seven percent since 2014 and the graduation rate has soared to almost 90 percent.

The school has received the prestigious National Magnet School of Distinction Award for the second consecutive year and has added the prominent AP Capstone Program for the 2016-2017 school year. The number of students being accepted to a 4-year institution has increased by 88 percent since 2014.

Under the leadership of former principal, Eric Acosta, the school has added two magnet programs, increased the number of AP courses, and enhanced its elective offerings.

“As we reflect on our collective work, it is prudent to feel a sense of pride and joy, but we must never rest on yesterday’s accomplishments, there is still much work to be done,” said Acosta. “This turnaround is not the work of any one individual, it is the will of an entire faculty and staff.”

The school’s staff, faculty and administration plan to continue their work following the naming of a new principal, Lisa Garcia. For more information on the school visit www.hmltrojans.org or contact Jennifer Murray, Activities Director/Magnet Lead to schedule a tour.
