Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School junior A’kierya Render received a $40,000 BigFuture Scholarship from the College Board, a not-for-profit known for administering the SAT, Advanced Placement and PSAT tests, among other exams.
The College Board also offers monthly drawings for $500 and $40,000 scholarships.
A’kierya is one of two students who received a $40,000 scholarship in September.
The BigFuture scholarship is not based on grades, citizenship status or an essay. Students qualify when they start their education career planning with the board on its website. The more steps a student completes, the more entries for scholarships they will receive.
“Additionally, students who qualify as lower income, meaning their families earn less than $60,000 per year, earn an additional entry for the scholarship drawing,” Sara Sympson, director of communications for the College Board wrote in an email.
The program is currently open to students planning to graduate in 2024 or 2025.
