On November 16, members of the Hialeah Miami Lakes (HML) National Honor Society (NHS) participated in a team building field trip to the Ropes TRAC Course at Florida International University’s (FIU) Biscayne campus.
The event was funded through a Miami Lakes Town Foundation mini-grant, which provides funds for local groups to support youth programs, beautification projects, and cultural events. The mini-grants awarded this year were provided using funds from the first Miami Lakes Food and Wine Festival held last spring.
FIU’s TRAC is an experiential educational program. This hands-on program fosters team building through group and individual initiatives. NHS members learned new skills through a series of adventure-based activities that provide training in leadership, team building development, communication and problem-solving skills. Students did tight rope walks and zip lines as their teammates ensured they were safe and secure.
“This event showed me that when your team is behind you, you can do anything!” said new NHS member, Joaquin Otero, who overcame his fear of heights to participate.
