The Miami Herald's Silver Knight Program recognizes outstanding students who have maintained excellent grades and have unselfishly applied their special knowledge to their schools and communities.
Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School student, Jenny Olguin, was the Silver Knight nominee for her school in the category of Social Science.
Olguin's Silver Knight project included participating in her school's National Honor Society in order to raise funds for Relay for Life. Olguin's group exceeded their goal and raised $5,000. As team planning captain and planning committee member, Olguin had first-hand experience in leadership, building on the skills she gained in her previous three years spent participating.
“I'm very passionate for this event because I have met many people in my life with cancer and I really wanted to make a difference,” said Olguin.
Olguin maintained the highest GPA for her school, graduating as a top student with a weighted 6.69 GPA. She holds various officer positions for school extracurricular programs such as National Honor Society, Student Government, Science National Honor Society, Sapphire Dance Company Team, and is a participant in Model United Nations and peer counseling.
Though so heavily involved with her high school organizations, Olguin is college ready, having taken 11 advanced placement courses, six dual enrollment courses at Miami-Dade College, and 11 dual enrollment courses at Florida International University. Apart from her academic achievements, Olguin has volunteered with various organizations including Miami Children's Museum, Friends of Greyhounds, Heartland Healthcare Center, Shula's Summer Camp, New Life Family Center and the Town of Miami Lakes.
Olguin's accomplishments have set her on the course toward a prestigious secondary education. She will be attending Cornell University in the fall.
