Jose Marti’s Scherezada Lozada was a finalist and winner of the Miami-Dade County PTA/PTSA Leader of Tomorrow/Student Involvement Award which recognizes students that have made an impact in their school and community.
Lozada is a member of the Jose Marti MAST 6-12 Academy PTSA and their own student representative. Lozada, with her dedicated nature has carried out an annual uniform drive for the past three years that has brought great benefit to the school, local charities and even foreign countries. Together with the PTSA, she collects approximately 1,000 used uniforms annually.
During the summer, she spends most of her time washing, sewing and preparing these uniforms for a used uniforms salel at the school orientation where students from low-income households can buy uniforms for much cheaper prices than regular stores. All proceeds collected are then donated in the St. Jude Walk/Run against childhood cancer.
Some of the uniforms are also shipped to Panama, Cuba, Colombia, Guatemala and Nicaragua where they are given to unprivileged families. In the past three years, she has collected over 3,000 uniforms where approximately 1,800 of those have been shipped to those families through Salvation Army and Sirvas del Segrada Corazon Corp.
