Students from Lawton Chiles Middle School won 1st place in the 2021 - 2022 SECME Festival and Olympiad Bridge competition held remotely by Miami-Dade County Public Schools on Jan. 29.
The winners shown above are, from left: Kennedy Granville and Agustin Betancourt, both in seventh grade and Amerie Cummings, eighth grade at the school, at 8190 NW 197th St. in Miami.
The students built the lightest bridge with the least mass that could hold the most amount of weight. Then to determine the efficiency of the bridge, they had to divide the weight it held by the mass of the bridge, the school said.
SECME (formerly the Southeastern Consortium for Minorities in Engineering) is a county program that provides opportunities for students, teachers and parents to engage in STEM activities and to promote diversity in the field.
