St. Thomas University signed several athletes for its inaugural wrestling team, including Barbara Goleman Senior High’s Maximo Fernandez and Mater Lakes Academy’s Reynaldo Rivera.
Fernandez plans to enroll in the school’s sports administration program. Rivera plans to study nursing.
St. Thomas coach Jake
Patacsil announced both signings in recent weeks.
Rivera was a district finalist as a sophomore and junior, and as a senior placed third in the 170-pound class at the “H-Town Throwdown” -- a prestigious tournament in Hialeah Gardens that typically attracts about 30 teams.
During their first season, the Bobcats will compete in the
Mid-South Conference as part of the National Association of
Intercollegiate Athletics.
Other schools offering wrestling in the Mid-South Conference include Southeastern University and Keiser
University in Florida; Life University and Brewton-Parker College in Georgia;
Cumberland University in
Tennessee and University of the
Cumberlands, Campbellsville University, Lindsey Wilson
College, Thomas More
University and Midway
University -- all in Kentucky. --David Snelling
