M-Dade Public Schools prepares for new school meals

Education Wednesday, August 17, 2016

In one week, Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) will be welcoming more than 342,000 students back to school. The Food and Nutrition Department has been working diligently planning healthy, nutritious menus for the school year ahead.

The department’s Test Kitchen is a bustling sight as cooks prepare a wide selection of meals being offered this school year, including student favorites such as spaghetti and baked chicken wings, mini-sliders, fruit smoothies, fresh salads and a new, lower sugar sports drink.

M-DCPS also offers free breakfast every school day to every student for a healthy start to their academic day. From August 22 through October 28, students who eat breakfast at school every day will be entered in a weekly drawing for a $25 Amazon gift card provided by General Mills. Twenty-four student winners will be randomly selected each week.

Additionally, from September 12 to November 18, all students who eat school lunch each day of the week will automatically be entered into the Magnificent Mini Mondays Lunch Contest. Weekly, 25 students will be randomly selected to receive a $15 Amazon Gift Card provided by Advance Pierre.
