Life long resident Edgar Carrero has realized the honor he has always cherished - acceptance to Harvard University, where he will enter as a freshman this fall.

A recent graduate of MAST Academy on Virginia Key, Carrero is a true Miami Laker having attended Bob Graham Education Center from kindergarten to 8th grade. A stellar student along the way, Carrero also player soccer, excelled in Tae Kwon Do, swam for the PSN pool and participated in every child-oriented activity Miami Lakes offers.

Even though MAST Academy is 27 miles from his home, Carrero knew the school could help him reach higher goals. He graduated with an unweighted 3.97 GPA and a 6.503 weighted GPA, placing him in the top 10 percent of his class, and a top 5 percent rank in Florida for the class of 2015.

Carrero is an AP Scholar having taken 13 AP classes at MAST and excelling in them. He received the Frederick Douglas and Susan B. Anthony Award for Academic Excellence from the University of Rochester, and his school's Certificate of Academic Excellence in Calculus. He achieved Academy Honor Roll for 16 straight quarters, was a member of the National Honor Society since 2012 and the Spanish Honor Society.

His parents, Edgar and Sofia Carrero, emigrated from Venezuela shortly before he was born in Fairfax, Virginia, and now he returns to the area having established himself as a natural leader.

At MAST, Carrero was elected Sophomore Class president and served on his Class Executive Board ending as Senior Class president. He participated for four years in the school’s JROTC program, the nation’s only Coast Guard ROTC program.

In sports, Carrero was a four-year letterman on the MAST varsity swim team and four years on the Varsity water polo team.

Carrero has also made contributions to the Miami Lakes community having served as an usher at Our Lady of the Lakes Sunday masses for two years, a Youth Group Counselor at Miami Lakes United Methodist Church’s Summer Youth Program for six years, and a volunteer at many town events totaling well over 250 hours of volunteerism.

The interest in government cumulated in an opportunity to serve as an intern for Congresswomen Ileana Ros-Lehtinen in 2013. She was so impressed by his knowledge and work ethic that she, herself, wrote a recommendation letter for him to attend Harvard.

Carrero plans to study Government and Economics at Harvard and attend law school after graduation. He hopes to extend his success in leadership and politics by someday serving his community as an elected official.
