WNBA All Star Erica Wheeler and her Wheeler Kid Foundation held its 4th Annual Basketball Camp at Mater Lakes Academy’s new gym in Hialeah.

More than 180 girls participated in the camp on Oct. 16, when the kids received athletic shoes, a bag and shirts courtesy of sponsor Adidas, the school said.

Wheeler, originally from the Liberty City section of Miami who is a guard for the Los Angeles Sparks, was an All Star MVP in 2019.

“Honestly I just want every camper to feel like they can be whatever they want to be, whether it’s a basketball player, a teacher or an artist,” Wheeler said in a camp video posted on the foundation’s Facebook page.

Betnijah Laney, a shooting guard/small forward with the New York Liberty, and Natalie Achonwa, a forward/center with the Minnesota Lynx, joined Wheeler at the camp, Mater Lakes said.

Gus Pelaez is the head girls basketball coach. The program hosted the event.
