Mater Lakes Academy students will graduate with MDC associate degrees

In the last weekend of April, seniors at Mater Lakes Academy joined thousands of other seniors from across the state for Grad Bash at Universal in Orlando to celebrate their accomplishments. Among them were 32 students who had a second reason to celebrate: earning their college degree.

“Mater Lakes has prepared me for my pursuit of a collegiate education by instilling a strong work ethic and an ambitious mindset on me. At Mater Lakes, my teachers have inspired me to aim for the stars, and that will prepare me for the obstacles college will have,” said high school senior, Felipe Gomez.

This group of students earned their Associate in Art degrees from Miami Dade College North Campus at the James L. Knight Center in addition to graduating with honors from Mater Lakes Academy. Many of the Class of 2017 graduates have been students at Mater Lakes Academy since the sixth grade and Mater Lakes has taken great pride in watching them develop.

“It is an honor to have these types of students at our school. It has been a pleasure to have helped in the development and growth of their post-secondary education. I look forward to see their accomplishments in the future and their impact in our community,” said principal Rene F. Rovirosa.

Mater Lakes Academy will hold its eighth commencement ceremony for the Class of 2017 on Tuesday, June 6, at 2 p.m. at the Miami Dade County Auditorium. Mater Lakes Academy has 249 students in their graduating class, the largest in the school’s history thus far.

“These 32 Mater Lakes Academy ‘stars’ will be among the 1200 plus graduating students who will walk across the stage at the North Campus Commencement. What a phenomenal sense of pride and accomplishment for these students, their high school and college faculty and their families given that as members of the Mater Lakes Academy Class of 2017, they are graduating with a high school diploma as well as a well-earned degree from Miami Dade College North Campus,” said Dr. Malou Harrison, North Campus president for Miami Dade College.
