Hialeah Miami Lakes High’s wrestling team won the 16-A District Championship, while Mater Lakes Academy was the Class 1A District runner-up and Dual Team district runner-up.

The Bears also set a school record with five individual District champions.

HML and Mater Lakes will compete in the regionals with a berth at the state championships at stake.

For Mater Lakes, the Bears also qualified all 12 wrestlers to the regional tournament at Cardinal Gibbons High School.

Cole Schwartzberg (three time district champion), Rafael Alvarez, Steven Altamirano, Haniel Suris, and David Alvarez all claimed individual district titles.

Omar Armengol placed second losing an extremely tight bout with state contender Darian Estevez from Somerset Academy Chapel Trail. Armengol and Estevez will likely meet in a highly anticipated Regional final matchup this weekend.

Justin Zerbinati also placed second in his first ever District tournament. Douglas Boutemy and Gonzalo Perez finished third. Dylan Lanning, Jorge Rodriguez, and Ethan Vergara all placed fourth to advance to the Regional tournament.

“I cannot wait to see the result for the Regional tournament because I know we will have several of our wrestlers place for state. We have five seniors on the team, and they will be greatly missed next season, but they have set a foundation for years to come at Mater Lakes,” exclaimed coach Brandon Neifeld.
