The urban artistic movement of stepping and dancing will come to life at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) North Campus during the first annual Stomp the Yard at 10 a.m., Friday, January 20, allowing local high school seniors to get a taste of college life in the process. The North Campus is located at 11380 N.W. 27 Avenue.
The 2007 movie, Stomp the Yard, which highlighted stepping competitions at a college campus, brought the dance style to the masses. This event exemplifies MDC North Campus’s commitment to Miami’s urban students and is in keeping with a long and rich tradition in African-based communities that use movement, words and sounds for ethnic and artistic expression.
“This event provides our students with a taste of campus life that will enrich their cultural exposure while obtaining assistance with college related matriculation matters that will steer them well on their way to educational and academic success in college,” said Dr. Malou C. Harrison, North Campus president.
This event will showcase MDC’s North Campus feeder high schools including the North Miami Beach Drumline and Drill Team, Miami Norland Senior High’s Dynasty Step Team, the Alonzo and Tracy Mourning Dance Team, William H. Turner Technical Arts High School’s Voices of Expression, and the MDC North Campus’s own Alpha Dance Team.
