The Town of Miami Lakes and children’s learning group Snapology are offering two new STEAM programs for kids this fall.

For eight weeks, kids ages 4 to 8 can learn engineering, robotics and beginner-friendly coding at the STEAM adventures program.

Kids in the program will meet on Friday afternoons to work on problem solving using those skills.

The STEAM Adventures program runs from 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. from September 4 to October 23. It’s $160 for Miami Lakes residents and $200 for non-residents.

For kids ages 9 to 14, there is the robotics competition team, which teaches them to design, build and program robots using a biodiversity theme.

The robotics competition team meets from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. from September 4 to October 23 and is $200 for residents and $240 for non-residents.

Both STEAM Adventures and the robotics competition team will meet at the Miami Lakes Youth Center, 6075 Miami Lakes Drive.

“STEAM” stands for “science, technology, engineering, art and math” and is the latest iteration of the education trend formerly known as “STEM” - in recent years, art has been added to the push for more sciences. Miami-Dade Public Schools has worked in recent years to bolster STEAM opportunities. The school district designates certain schools as STEAM schools. Area STEAM schools include Bob Graham Education Center, Mater Lakes Academy and Miami Lakes K-8 Center.
