Miami Lakes Educational Center’s newspaper, The Harbinger, attended the Florida International University event Journalism Day which brings together journalism programs from across the county for a day of workshops, lectures, and hands-on activities alongside professional journalists, broadcasters, photographers, and professors.

The Harbinger newspaper at MLEC is led by Editor-in-Chief Alexandra Reboredo and Managing Editor Sabine Joseph and the advisor is teacher Neyda Borges.

The staff participated in various competitions at the event including three on-the-spot writing competitions for news, features and creative writing where students write on the keynote’s speaker’s address and a short interview that follows. This year’s speaker was Lauren Pastrano of CBS-4 News.

MLEC students placed in all three competitions with first place for feature writing going to Valeria Bula, and second place to Luis Mila. For news writing third place went to Devin Dubon and for creative writing first place went to Sabine Joseph.
