Miami Lakes K-8 Center (MLK8) musicians have been busy earning top ratings at district performance events. This is the first year MLK8 students have participated in the district music performance assessment.

On March 1, the school orchestra performed at Coral Reef Senior High for the Concert Music Performance Assessment. This 23-member string orchestra performed Sword Dance, Finlandia, and Antagonist for three judges. Their overall rating was the highest possible score, a superior rating.

Orchestra students performed at the Florida Orchestra Association Solo and Ensemble event on February 3 at Braddock Senior High, and the Band students participated in the Florida Band Association’s event on Friday, February 23 at Coral Park Senior High.

The purpose of the solo and ensemble events is to perform a prepared piece for a judge and receive constructive feedback and an overall rating based on musicianship skills. All participating students received a superior.

Performers range from first to third year band and orchestra members: Nickolai Rushka, Natalie Drada, Alyssa Galarza, Brianna Saldarini, Sofia Rebustillo, Emily Castro, Sabrina Scavuzzo, Karina Scavuzzo, Alejandro Gallen, Kevin Orozco and Nicholas Corea.

In addition to the festivals students have participated in, five MLK8 musicians were accepted into the Superintendent’s Honor’s Music Festival. Students Gallen, Scavuzzo, Rushka, Matthew Castellanos and Timothy Giron took part in performing.

“I am so proud of these young musicians. They are extremely talented and have the work ethic to help them go far in music and life,” said director and teacher Sara Cino.
