The Miami Lakes K-8 Center Chess Club completed the last tournament of the school year in May after a successful season.

The tournament, sponsored by the 64 Squares Foundation, had students competing from dozens of schools over six hours. All of the MLK-8 students fared well, especially Michael Montoya who won the 3rd place overall for his division.

The Chess Club, consisting of 22 students, plays after school three times a week. The Club’s sponsor, science teacher Oscar Badillo, is attempting to make chess an elective.

“We do well against all schools even though, especially at the middle school division, other schools’ chess teams learn the game as a class, not a past time. I am so very proud of our students and their commitment to the mind expanding world of Chess,” Badillo said.
