Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School students Rafael De la Cova and Mariel Dorismond competed in the 77th annual Miami Herald/Scripps Spelling Bee at Jungle Island.

De la Cova is a four time school winner and Dorismond won her first school’s Spelling Bee competition to qualify to compete against 375 public and private school students from Miami-Dade, Broward and Monroe counties.

The middle school winner and elementary school winner went on to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C.

In addition to improving students’ spelling skills and increasing their vocabularies, Spelling Bee participation provides valuable experience in developing poise – a necessary skill for success in public speaking, performing arts and athletics.
