Last year, Our Lady of the Lakes varsity boys volleyball team finished the season with two losses, including a defeat in the All Catholic Conference semi-final game.
In 2017, there was a new focus and a new mission for the Cheetahs, making school history by playing in the Championship game. The team determination proved to be too much for their opponents during the regular season going undefeated with a record of 9-0, and they never lost a set going 18-0.
They were crowned the North Division Champions and awarded the No. 1 seed in the 4th Annual All Catholic Conference boys playoffs. In the quarterfinals, they defeated Epiphany, and for the second year in a row, they reached the semi-final game versus St. Thomas Catholic School. The Cheetahs were all business and defeated the Tornados in two straight sets and celebrated their first ever trip to the Championship game.
Unfortunately, in the Championship game, the Cheetahs faced a hot streaking team in the Wolverines of Belen Jesuit, and the Cheetahs suffered their first loss of the season. The boys made history by becoming the first OLL boys team to ever play in the championship game, and the Cheetahs were named the 2017 All Catholic Conference boys volleyball runner-ups. “It was a great season and a great ride. This team will forever have a special place in my heart,” said Coach John Garcia.
