The Independent Schools of South Florida bestowed Star Student Awards upon three eighth graders from Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic School in Miami Lakes, the school said.
The students shown in caps and gowns --- Angelica Gutierrez; Kimberly Kristiansen and Emma Talavera -- were nominated by the school.
Each winner is considered to be an exemplary student, who sets an example for others to follow whether at home or in class, the school said.
They must also excel in one or more activities: Academics; community service; citizenship; fine arts; athletics; student activities; perseverance; effort; dedication; commitment to positive goals; improvement in performance and attitude.
OLL fifth graders Lauren Veliz, 11, and Lucy Llanes, 11, were winners in the Miami-Dade County Water and Sewer “Every Drop Counts” poster contest, the school said. Lauren took first place in District 13 and Lucy won an honorable mention, one of two in District 13. Their instructors were Art teacher Alena Beasley; fifth grade teacher Maria Alfonso and math teacher Sylvia Gonzalez.
