Monsignor Edward Pace High School’s Mission Club collected 3,000 pounds of food and raised $30,000 to benefit several charities in South Florida and for its sister school in Port-de-Paix, Haiti, the school said.
During events -- such as Battle of the Bands & DJs, the No Shave November challenge, Tons of Love Thanksgiving Food Drive and Dress Down Week -- the students collect donations. Tons of Love is a challenge between all four grades and the one that collects the most food wins.
The school said the Class of 2025 (the junior class) won the competition for its collection of food and $1,000 raised that paid for Publix gift cards.
Beneficiaries include Pace’s pantry; Annunciation Catholic Church Parish which works with Encuentros Juveniles to provide food to migrant farm workers in south Miami-Dade County; Immaculate Conception Catholic School; Las Marianitas Sisters convent in Opa-Locka; Marian Center School & Service; Mother of Our Redeemer Catholic Church; San Lazaro Catholic Church; St. James Catholic School; St. Monica’s Catholic Church and Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Perry, Fla. Donations also went to the sister school in Port-de-Paix, Haiti.
The club has donated to South Florida charities for 35 years.
