The School for Advanced Studies partnered with Miami Dade College North Campus on Jan. 28 to host the 3rd Annual Middle School Math Invitational. Fifteen middle schools and K-8 centers participated in the contest.
Daniel Hagan, a 7th grade student from Lawton Chiles Middle School, was the best individual performer from Miami Lakes. He took home third place in his grade level.
Competitors took four tests, all without using calculators, SAS said.
Individual exams had 30 problems that had to be solved within 30 minutes. There was also a mental math test of 20 problems with 15 minutes to solve them and without doing any scratch work.
There were two team tests, one for algebra and probability and the other about geometry and potpourri. Teams of four kids had 15 minutes to solve those exams, which had 20 questions each.
Competitors came from Carol City Middle School; Cutler Bay Middle School; Ethel Koger Beckham K-8 Center; Eugenia B. Thomas K-8 Center; Frank C. Martin International K-8 Center; Hialeah Gardens Middle School; Hubert O. Sibley K-8 Academy; Lawton Chiles Middle School; Leewood K-8 Center; Miami Lakes K-8 Center; Howard D. McMillan Middle School; Redland Middle School; Ruben Dario Middle School; Ruth K. Broad Bay Harbor K-8 Center and South Dade Middle School.
