Scouts take to the sea

A day spent learning to surf in the ocean cured some of the pandemic blues felt by members of Boy Scout Troop 566, who went to Deerfield Beach in November.

Chartered by Our Lady of the Lakes Catholic Church, Troop 566 is focused on getting outside and creating great memories, Scoutmaster Sean Schwinghammer said.

Ocean waves are at their best in November and the troop would normally camp in Cocoa Beach or Sebastian Inlet to get the best rides.

But COVID-19 restrictions meant the surfing outing had to happen close to home.

Professional trainers and lifeguards taught novice surfers the basics and everyone got up on a board while maintaining safe distances from each other, Schwinghammer said.

Other troop activities this year have included a day-long, outdoor Scout Challenge, shooting and swimming competitions to earn certifications.

Their next adventure is a canoe camping trip. All boys ages 11 to 17 are welcome to join Troop 566.
