Spanish Lake alumni visit with 5th grade graduates

Education Tuesday, June 28, 2016

Spanish Lake Elementary fifth grade teacher, Lesley Caraballo, implemented a new program at the school in an effort to link graduates to graduating seniors at Miami-Dade County schools who also attended SLE. The school first opened its doors in 2007 and with the launch of this program seniors have returned to their alma mater to speak about their experiences and plans after graduation. The program took place the last week of school.

Sebastian Salas, a Miami Lakes Educational Center student and one of SLE’s founding fifth graders returned to speak to students with his friend and business partner, Erick Rivera. After SLE, Sebastian continued his education at Lawton Chiles Middle School and then moved to Miami Lakes Educational Center where he met Rivera. Both boys were enrolled in the engineering program.

They motivated and inspired each other to create a business. Salas and Rivera are now the proud owners of WunderThought, a 3D printing company for creative innovation. The students just recently designed the school uniforms for incoming classes at MLEC.

Salas will continue his education in engineering at the University of Florida and Rivera will continue his education at Miami-Dade College.  Their business will continue online.
