Schools in Miami Lakes continue to perform well on state tests, earning A ratings after students took exams in 2024-2025.
School Board Member Roberto Alonso, who represents District 4, said he was proud of the schools’ achievements.
Four schools in the area outside of town raised their rankings, too.
The town has a reputation for having excellent public schools.
Those that have earned an A in consecutive years are Bob Graham Education Center (since 2004); Miami Lakes K-8 Center (since 2019); Miami Lakes Middle School (since 2017); Barbara Goleman Senior High School (since 2019) and Miami Lakes Educational Center (since 2017), Florida Department of Education records show.
“All of our schools are A’s,” Alonso said. “The only one that continued being a B was [Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School]. But [the overall results reflect] the incredible work of our teachers and our administrators at the schools.”
District 4 includes schools in Miami Lakes, Hialeah, Hialeah Gardens and unincorporated northwest Miami-Dade County, to the border with Broward County.
Hialeah Miami Lakes Senior High School has been ranked B since 2017, but Alonso said that the district is working to raise its grade to an A.
“A lot of Miami Lakes kids aren’t going to HML … because they don’t feel that school really had programming that they wanted,” Alonso said.
The district has invested in new programs in aerospace and law at HML to attract kids to those courses.
“I truly believe they should be an A school,” Alonso said.
Bob Graham Education Center has been ranked an A school for 20 years, he said.
“It’s something we’re extremely proud of,” Alonso said.
Another change by the district was to close Country Club Middle School, which had been ranked C since 2022. It had a smaller student population and low enrollment numbers, he said.
Those students will attend Lawton Chiles Middle School, he said.
“Myself, together with the board, made the decision to bring those students together to a higher performing environment, where we could bring our best and brightest teachers to work together with them,” Alonso said.
Grades for the schools are calculated based on testing scores of students each year.
According to the Florida Department of Education, 95% of eligible students must be tested to calculate a school’s grade.
The test is called FAST, or the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking.
It analyzes progress of students from voluntary pre-kindergarten to grade 10, in English Language Arts, Writing and Mathematics.
Results for other schools in the area include Jose Marti Mast 6-12 Academy, which has retained its A status since 2012.
Spanish Lake Elementary, traditionally an A school since 2016, dropped to a B in 2023-2024 and pulled an A rating this year.
Lawton Chiles Middle School, a B school since 2015, got a C in 2023-2024 and earned a B this year.
Palm Springs North Elementary, which has received mostly As since 2004, raised its grade from a B last year to an A.
Charter schools Mater Academy Lakes High School received an A, and Mater Academy Lakes Middle School received its first A grade since 2019, the state report shows.
