Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS) will resume classes later this month on August 20. Students are expected to complete their summer reading assignments for their first day back to school. With school beginning in just three weeks, below is a list of local school’s required reading assignments.
Miami Lakes Educational Center (MLEC) requires all grades to complete a PDF file of books assigned to each class. The book assigned to the freshmen class is To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. Sophomores are assigned Tuesdays With Morrie by Mitch Albom. Juniors will read Ella Minnow Pea (A Novel in Letters) by Mark Dunn and seniors are required to read How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster. Jose Marti MAST 6-12 Academy (MAST) provides all summer reading materials on their website at www.mast3.com under the student tab. In the tab, students can find not only their required summer reading, but their math assignments as well. For more information on the first day back to school, MAST will be hosting a new student orientation on Saturday, August 18 at 9 a.m. in the school’s auditorium. There, students will be able to identify their homeroom class and review basic school rules to assure a smooth start to the first day back.
Monsignor Edward Pace High School (Pace) has assigned both English and Social Studies reading materials to students for the summer break. For freshmen, English materials include A Dog’s Purpose by Bruce Cameron and The Alchemist by Paul Coelho. Freshmen Social Studies materials include Night by Eli Weisel, Maus I by Art Spiegelman and Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini.
For sophomores, English materials include Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson and The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night by Mark Haddon with Hiroshima by John Hersey being their material for Social Studies. Juniors are required to read The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, The Good Thief by Hannah Tinti, The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams and The Awakening by Kate Chopin.
Social Studies required for juniors include With Every Drop of Blood by James Lincoln Collier, Bootleg: Murder, Moonshine, and the Lawless Years of Prohibition by Karen Blumenthal, Imperfect Presidents: Tales of Misadventure and Triumph by Jim Cullen and Don’t Know Much About History (American) by Kenneth C. Davis.
Finally, seniors required readings for English are Frankenstein by Mary Shelley, Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte, How to Read Literature like a Professor by Thomas Foster and Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw.
Social Studies readings are Animal Farm by George Orwell, Hardball: How Politics is Played, Told by One Who Knows the Game by Christopher Matthews, The Constitution of the United States, The Thirteen American Arguments by Howard Fineman and Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America by Barbara Ehrenreich.

American Senior High School (ASHS) requires a summer reading project with details that can be found on their Virtual Bookbag section on their website at www.americanshs.org. In summary, freshmen are required to read The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, sophomores are assigned to I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai, juniors must read Speeches that Changed the World by Simon Sebag Montefiore and seniors are assigned to Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes by Edith Hamilton. ASHS also encourages students to practice for their SAT exams via Khan Academy.
Mater Lakes Academy Middle and High School requires sixth grade students to read Hoot by Carl Hiaasen, seventh graders will read Lion (a Long Way Home) by Saroo Brierley and The Giver by Lois Lowry will be the reading assignment for eight graders.
As for high school, freshmen will be reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and sophomores will be assigned to Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. Juniors will read The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, while AP Language students will read Thank You for Arguing by Jay Heinrichs and 1984 by George Orwell. Seniors will read The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood while AP language students will read Tess of the D’Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy and How to Read Literature Like a Professor by Thomas C. Foster.
