Town Topics: School traffic

Since kids have returned to school, drivers have complained about more traffic in Miami Lakes during drop-off and pickup times. What's the solution?

Amy Diaz Miami Lakes Owner, FH Fashion House

“As I currently sit in school traffic for drop off myself, I just don’t know what we can do to alleviate it given most of these streets are one lane streets,” Amy Diaz said.   “Only thing I could possibly think of is the possibility of staggering drop off/pickups by sections of grades in time slots, versus the entire school at once. And/or, more officers directing traffic."

Steven Herrera Social Studies Teacher at Barbara Goleman Senior High School

“I think that having more bus routes is important in easing some school traffic,” Steven Herrera said.  “As a magnet school, we have students that don’t live nearby and with limited buses, those students have no choice but to drive to school.”

John Boswell Miami Lakes Laboratory scientist

“Carpooling,” John Boswell said.  “That within itself will help with the traffic. “It would be best for parents to arrange carpooling with their families and friends in the area. Also, kids riding their bikes safely to school can be a solution."

Alejandro Perlaza  Miami Lakes Warehouse Worker

“It seems like everyone in Miami Lakes has a car,” Alejandro Perlaza said. “That’s the reason for traffic.  I think kids should walk to school and ride their bikes to take some cars off the road."

Omar Hussain South Miami Medical Student

“Last year, traffic wasn’t bad because students were working from home during the pandemic,” Omar Hussain said. “Now that we have returned to normal life, I’ve seen traffic congestion throughout Miami-Dade County.  One solution is the town mayor should petition for state or federal funding to expand roads to accommodate the traffic, especially near schools. Another solution is one group of students start school early and another group start later."
