Mater Academy Middle School students Lorena Pita and Sara Pedraja were named finalists for the 2019 Project CSGIRLS Competition for middle school girls.
With the assistance of their adviser Michael Mitrani, the girls created their projects that represent innovative, creative, and impactful applications of technology for social good. The two students are the only finalists from the state of Florida, and they are invited to the Project CSGIRLS National Gala in Washington D.C., where they will announce the National Winners.
Founded during the summer of 2013, Project CSGIRLS is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the gender gap in computing and technology. The organization’s unique idea of a technology and computer science competition for middle school girls stemmed from the fact that a large chunk of learning and development occurs during the critical middle school period.
