United Way Miami presented an Outstanding Youth Award to Julianna Correa of Miami Lakes.

Correa, 18, said she was recognized in June for reading projects that she did as a Girl Scout.

“Being in Girl Scouts not only taught me how to empower myself and believe in myself, but it’s also a part of my foundation,” Correa said. “They taught me how to be a good person and believe in my principals and morals.”

Correa is a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts, an organization she joined at age 5 as a Daisy, Girl Scouts of Tropical Florida said.

She was also a Silver Knight nominee this year for athletics.

A graduate of Barbara Goleman Senior High School, she played on the basketball, swimming and water polo teams.

In May, Correa was one of 12 students who received Awards of Excellence from the Town of Miami Lakes, The Graham Companies and the Education Advisory Board.  She was recognized in the English Literature category.

Correa will attend the University of Alabama this month where she hopes to major in psychology.

She is the daughter of Rebecca Correa and Julio Correa and has a brother, Justin Correa.
