The program is open to all high school seniors from Mater Academy affiliated schools who plan to enroll in an accredited U.S. four-year college or university.
Besides earning good grades, to qualify for the program, students must be dedicated, a leader, a volunteer worker, a college-bound and community-minded individual.
Students must also provide a letter of recommendation from teachers and administrators at the school and a well-written and creative essay.
Students attending American High, Barbara Goleman High, Hialeah Miami Lakes High, Hialeah Gardens High, and Mater Lakes Academy can apply for other scholarship awards in academics and athletics during the 2016-2017 school.
The John H. Peavy, Jr., Scholarship is a monetary award in the amount of $4,500 or more granted to graduating seniors in high school. The scholarship program was named after Peavy, who served as a teacher, counselor and an assistant principal at Miami Northwestern High from 1952 to 1988.
Students can also apply for the Give Kids a Chance Scholarship, a program which awards high school seniors desiring to continue their education but need additional financial assistance to do so. Recipients are eligible for additional awards given they maintain full-time status and meet academic requirements.
In addition, the OMBAR Aspiring Business Professional Scholarship program awards students who are interested in pursuing a business degree at any accredited post-secondary school or college.
The College Assistance Program (CAP) provides scholarships to Miami-Dade County Public School graduates who have exhausted all avenues of financial assistance but still have significant unmet needs to attend the college of their choice.
Students pursuing a career in technology, engineering math and science may want to learn more about the ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Math and Science Scholars.
The scholarship program was created by Dr. Bernard Harris, a former astronaut, physician and businessman, and ExxonMobil, to increase the number of underrepresented students pursuing careers in STEM.
Hispanic students can apply for the Florida Hispanic Foundation Scholarship.
Two weeks ago during a ceremony at Marlins Park, 260 Miami-Dade Public Schools students were awarded over $231,000 in College Assistance Program grant scholarships thanks to the community partnership between CAP Inc., Miami-Dade Public Schools, the Foundation for New Education Initiatives and the Miami Foundation.
“The partnership helped reduce opportunity gaps and assist college-bound students with their education goals,” said Miami-Dade Public Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho.
