Youth Co-Op Charter School student Amy Rodriguez places first in map art counsel

Youth Co-Op Preparatory Charter School fourth grade student Amy Marie Doval Valdes Rodriguez was selected as first place winner in the 2017 Barbara Petchenik Children’s World Map Drawing Competition. 

Judges, which included artists, cartographers, and geography teachers, chose their favorite maps along with international participants at the 2017 American Association of Geographers (AAG) Conference in Boston.  

Rodriguez’s drawing titled, “Earth — A Fascinating Place Deep, Deep Inside the Milky Way,” was also considered a “Public Favorite” and qualified as a finalist for the International Children’s World Map Drawing Competition, to be held in Washington, DC during the 2017 International Cartographic Conference in July.  

Receiving honorable mentions were third grader Olivia Boidanich for “Volley Earth;” first grader Gabby Marie Doval Valdes Rodriguez, “Gabby is Thankful for the Earth;” fourth grader Jose Manuel Garcia Cejas, “If There Was Only 1 Channel;” third grader Anthony Proenza, “If the World Could Be Green.” These students are led by art teacher Jessica Castillo.
