In a move to improve the Town’s mobility and transportation infrastructure, and address the traffic congestion issues faced by residents and visitors, the Town submitted a proposal to the Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization (TPO) under the SMART Moves Grant Program to assist in funding the Miami Lakes Smart Mobility and Future Technology Transportation Study.
In late April, the Town’s proposal was approved, and full funding was awarded in the amount of $40,000 to complete the Study.
Purpose of the study is to assist the Town to identify, plan, and establish a future network of diverse transportation technologies to build an infrastructure that is capable of supporting the community’s needs, as well as, improving safety and mobility for all users.
The study will evaluate both existing and future technologies to support connected and autonomous transportation, traffic control and management, adaptive signalization, traveler data, pedestrian and bicycle safety, smart parking, energy efficient transportation technologies, and potential funding mechanisms to sustain a cost-effective future transportation network Town-wide.
Proposed benefits of the study include, but are not limited to the following:
• Increased efficient use of the existing roadway network, reduced traffic congestion, decreased emissions, reduced number of stops along corridors, and increased traffic flow that connects the residential and commercial properties, government public services, parks, shops, restaurants, entertainment, and places of workshop Town-wide.
• Improved mobility, transportation, safety, economic growth, and smart transit for the community.
• Expanded reach in creating opportunities for an Internet of Things (IoT) Town-wide network which embraces the integration of future transportation, resulting in improved efficiency, accuracy, safety, and economic benefit.
