The public gathered outside Miami Lakes Town Hall in tribute to those whose lives were lost during the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, and those who contracted fatal illnesses -- police, firefighters and others -- and died years later. The Veterans and Public Safety committees presented the event that was sponsored by Vicky Bakery; BB’s Bakehouse; AC Graphics Digital and the Miami Lakes Chamber of Commerce. Ria Monae sang the national anthem; Elevate Church Pastor Louis Egipciaco gave the invocation and Mayor Manny Cid spoke about teaching young people about the tragic events, including how some terrorists trained at Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport.
The second photo shows students from Barbara Goleman Senior High School's Law Honor Society and Hialeah-Miami Lakes Senior High School's National Honor Society chapter, under the leadership and sponsorship of Miami Lakes Vice Mayor Tony Fernandez and his campaign for mayor, and with Virtutem Populo, Inc., placed memorial flags in Veterans Park to represent lives lost on Sept. 11.
