The children of Wendy and Eladio Armesto of Miami Lakes served a week in the Florida legislature as volunteers in the House of Representatives’ Page & Messenger program.

Sabina Sofia Armesto, 16, a high school junior and Victor Manuel Armesto, 14, a sophomore, were in Tallahassee the week of Jan. 12, their mother said.

Fla. Rep. Tom Fabricio, R-Miami Lakes sponsored the siblings.

During the week, their experiences included meeting Gov. Ron DeSantis.

Both the state House and Senate offer programs for teenagers to assist legislators when they meet during the first quarter of each year.

To participate in either program, students should seek sponsorship from his or her local leglislator. They then must apply online.

House and Senate pages and messengers have similar duties.

They assist legislators by delivering materials and messages. They also form mock committees to draft and debate bills.

During their week in Tallahassee, students may also tour the Florida Supreme Court, the Historic Capitol or visit the Florida Channel.
