Mayor Manny Cid and Miami Lakes council members presented a proclamation for Gastroschisis Awareness Day to the Delgado family during the July 17 council meeting.

The Delgado’s recently  embarked on one of the hardest trials of their life. During Allison Delgado’s pregnancy, her daughter, Luna Mia Delgado, was diagnosed with Gastroschisis, a birth defect that allows intestines and sometimes, other organs, to protrude from the abdomen.

One in every 2,000 babies are born with the defect every year in the U.S. and cases have risen dramatically over the past 10 years.

During the presentation, Cid and council members commended the Delgado’s for contacting Governor Rick Scott requesting that Gastroschisis Awareness Day be recognized in Florida and their fundraising efforts to bring awareness about the disease.
