Elderly Affairs Committee plans senior events

Miami Lakes Elderly Affairs Committee  (EAC) will host several educational, fun and exciting events for seniors in August.

The EAC, in partnership with Miami-Dade County Commissioner Esteban Bovo Jr., will present Serving Our Seniors Expo from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, August 4, at the Mary Collins Community Center, 15151 N.W. 82 Avenue.

Participating agencies will include:

Miami-Dade Office of Community Advocacy (Hispanic Affairs Board), Miami-Dade Office of Community (Elder Affairs), Miami-Dade Transit Department (STS), Alliance for Aging, Miami-Dade Elections Department, Walgreen’s, Mosquito Control, Mount Sinai, Interamerica Medical Center, Cafe Domino, Mayra Poldo with Preferred Care Home Health, and Miami-Dade Water & Sewer Department (Showerhead and Toilet Efficiency program).

Special speakers will be addressing the following topics.

11 a.m. – Dr. Clifford Medina, Chief of General Medicine at Mt. Sinai, topic: Healthy Living as You Age.

11:30 a.m. – Michael Mut, Public Information Officer for Miami-Dade County Solid Waste Management Public Information & Outreach Division, topic: Mosquito 101.

Medicare 101 Workshop – In partnership with the Alliance for Aging, the EAC presents Medicare 101 Workshop, appropriate for anyone who is turning 65, and wants to know how Medicare and Medicaid work, has questions about HMOs, and supplement insurance, etc.

Workshop is presented by the SHINE program which is funded by Medicare to give free and unbiased information scheduled for 10 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, August 14, at Town Hall, 6601 Main Street. 

Lunch Bunch and Bingo – Socialize and make new friends while having fun and enjoying Free nutritious lunches provided by Giardino Gourmet Salads. Two events are scheduled at the Mary Collins Community Center, 15151 N.W. 82 Avenue: 

Wednesday, August 8, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Reservations are required and will close on Tuesday, August 7, at 5 p.m.

Wednesday, August 22, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Reservations can be made beginning Wednesday, August 15 at 8:30 a.m. and will close on Tuesday, August 21, at 5 p.m.

Marlins Games Field Trips – Miami Lakes resident, 65 and older, receive Free transportation and tickets to Thursday Miami Marlins home games. Tickets are sponsored by Wellmax Medical Center and transportation is hosted by the EAC and The Graham Companies.

The next field trip is set for the Marlins vs. the Atlanta Braves on Thursday, August 23 at 7:10 p.m. The bus will depart at 4:30 p.m. from Miami Lakes Optimist Clubhouse, 6411 N.W. 162 Street.

Senior Games: Basketball Shoot Game – The EAC concludes the 12th annual Senior Games Series with the Basketball Shoot Game from 9 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 25, at Shula’s Athletic Club.

Senior Games participants will receive a T-shirt and medals will be awarded to winners in each age division for the male and female groups.
