Lock It or Lose It Campaign results in 20 percent reduction in vehicle burglaries

In May 2016, Councilmember Ceasar Mestre, in partnership with the Town’s Public Safety Committee and Police Department, spearheaded the “Lock It or Lose It” awareness campaign aimed at encouraging community residents to lock their vehicles and remove any valuables.
Miami Lakes Police enacted a variety of investigative and proactive efforts. Additionally, informational flyers on how to prevent these crimes were disseminated by Town police officers during calls for service, business contacts, and homeowner associations’ presentations.

As a result, the Town and its Police Department are proud to report a 20 percent reduction in vehicle burglaries in 2016.

Removing valuables from cars and locking doors may seem simple enough, but many residents simply forget or get sidetracked due to the stress of daily life. The theft of a purse, wallet, or documents with sensitive information could also result in identity theft. These crimes can be prevented by simply locking homes, garage doors, windows and vehicles.
